< < Back to report-failed-drug-tests-up-among-ohio-prison-inmatesCOLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – State officials say the number of inmates in Ohio prisons testing positive for drugs has spiked from 2012 to 2014.
The Correctional Institution Inspection Committee says in a recently released report that the percentage of inmates who have tested positive for drug use is up 41 percent over two years.
The number rose from 2.7 percent of inmates failing randomly drug tests in 2012 to 3.8 percent last year. That number represents about 1,900 failed drug tests.
The report comes after prison officials reported recently intercepting a drone’s drop of a package containing drugs at Mansfield Correctional Institution.
Sixteen of the 27 state prisons recorded an increase in inmate drug use last year. Marijuana accounted for 79 percent of the positive drug tests.
