Gathering Place to Host Evening of Music, Dance, Art
< < Back to gathering-place-to-host-evening-of-music-dance-artThe Gathering Place will present an evening of music, poetry, artwork and dance during its “Community Illumination” benefit, scheduled for Friday, Aug. 21 from 5:30-9 p.m.
The event, to be held at Central Venue on Carpenter Street in Athens, is an advocacy piece designed to raise awareness of mental illness in the community, using art as a vehicle to conduct outreach about The Gathering Place’s programming and services.
Established in 1976, The Gathering Place is a community support program promoting recovery for adults coping with mental illness. The non-profit organization fosters recovery by encouraging participants to help and support one another; promotes community involvement and meaningful activity; and enhances personal development, well-being and healthy living.
This year, The Gathering Place is partnering with Paper Circle artists for a live screen-print event with member artwork for sale. The evening will also include the Voices of Poetry/Athens Dance Collective Project, plus music from house band The Gatherers and special guests The Come On, Come Ons, a group made up of Athens music scene veterans.
Tickets are $20 for adults. Children 12 and under will be admitted free. Tickets may be purchased online at thegpathens.org or at 7 North Congress Street in Athens.
