Pioneers Fall In Overtime Thriller

It took a few minutes of extra soccer, but it was Washington and Jefferson’s day as the Presidents topped the Pioneers 2-1.
It was career win number 200 for Washington and Jefferson coach Pete Curtis. His first victory as a head coach also came at the expense of the Pioneers.
Curtis’ pursuit of 200 got off to a good start when a Mariah Lockard cross found the feet of senior Sarah Zeh and then the back of the net, putting the Presidents up 1-0 11 minutes into the match.
The Pioneers wasted little time responding. 24 minutes later, junior Stevie Reilly took advantage of a bobbled ball and used her head to record her third goal of the season, tying the game at one.
Reilly’s goal proved to be the final one of regulation. Both squads managed to muster up three shots each in the second half, but both goalkeepers stood strong.
In the 89th minute, a mid-air collision sent Marietta goalkeeper Kaitlyn Pearse to the sidelines and brought in freshman keeper Sam Kelley.
Kelley was quickly tested in the overtime period, but it took only eight minutes for the Presidents to score off of a Bianca Rajan blast into the lower right corner. Rajan was set up by a cross from senior Holly Shipley.
With the win, Washington and Jefferson moves to 3-4 on the year.
The loss drops the Pioneers to 2-4, but Marietta looks to get back to winning this Saturday at 2 p.m. when the Pioneers travel to Oberlin.
