Williamstown Picks Up Comeback Win
< < Back to williamstown-picks-comeback-winThe Williamstown Yellow Jackets exploded for 21 second half points in their 21-14 victory over the Ravenswood Red Devils on Friday night.
With Williamstown trailing 14-0, Trace Hart broke off a 34-yard touchdown run to cut Ravenswood’s lead to 14-7 with 7:11 in the third quarter.
Jake Tracewell, who has been the leader of the Williamstown offense all season, tied the game on 10-yard touchdown run with 0:46 left in the third quarter.
And with just 2:40 left in the fourth quarter, David Hastings busted a 17-yard touchdown run to give the Yellow Jackets the 21-14 lead, which they would maintain for the remainder of the fourth quarter.
On the first play of the game, Ravenswood quarterback Heath Burgess rolled to his right and threw downfield, but Williamstown defensive back Hunter Neely leapt in front and intercepted the pass at the Williamstown 30-yard line.
The Yellow Jackets, however, failed to move the ball and punted it back to the Red Devils. Ravenswood proceeded to grind out a 10 play, 65-yard scoring drive behind the strength of its offensive line and running backs. Rhys Jelich gave the Red Devils a 7-0 lead on a 10-yard touchdown run, topping off a drive where he carried the ball five times for 38 yards.
On the Yellow Jackets’ ensuing possession, they picked up a first down when Tracewell connected with Neely for an eight-yard gain on third-and-3. Two plays later on third-and-10, Tracewell threw a deep pass intended for Hastings, but Burgess got his revenge, as he pulled down the interception.
After a couple of stalled drives by both teams, Ravenswood’s ground game carried Red Devils to another scoring drive.
Ravenswood’s final scoring drive went 61 yards and ended on Jelich punching it in from 1-yard out to put the Red Devils up, 14-0. Benjamin Johnson was the catalyst on the drive, as he accumulated 35 yards on two carries.
Williamstown’s (4-0) next game comes against St. Mary’s (4-0), and Ravenswood (2-2) will take on Ritchie County (3-1) next.
