Kennedy Museum Announces Fall Exhibits

The Kennedy Museum of Art is kicking off Ohio University’s 2015-16 school year with four new exhibits featuring nearly 100 works of art.
Lisa Quinn, educational programs coordinator at the Kennedy, said the museum’s staff selects many of the exhibits years in advance. Some of the exhibits, such as Art as Information, are suggested by OU faculty members and are class or student-driven.
“The Museum has a permanent collection of several thousand works of art,” she added. “Generally, the exhibitions are drawn from those collections, which include thousands of artists.”
The new exhibits include:
Art as Information: Maps, Plans and Diagrams (now through Jan. 10)
Guest curated by former OU faculty member Jakub Zdebik, this exhibition explores how art conveys information through data, text, the body through physical records, spatial information through maps and the self-reflexive intentions of the artists through plans. The works from the Kennedy Museum’s collection represent artists such as Robert Rauschenberg, Lorna Simpson, Lesley Dill, Sol LeWitt, Bruce Nauman, Chris Burden, Nancy Holt, Alice Aycock, John F. Simon Jr. and others.
Insights: The School of Art and Design Faculty Collection (Sept. 25 through March 27)
This exhibit highlights works of art acquired to date for the newly established collection of work by current and past professors at Ohio University. Artists with pieces in the exhibition include Julie Dummermuth, Erik Forrest, Abner Jonas, Ron Kroutel, Mary Manusos, Robert Peppers, Gary Pettigrew, and Donald Roberts.
Two Grey Hills: Navajo Weaving (Sept. 15 through Dec. 23)
Two Grey Hills is a regional style of Navajo weaving that became recognized in the early 20th century for extremely fine tapestry weavings with geometric patterning made of natural handspun wool.
Creating Visual Meaning (Sept. 25 through March 27)
This exhibition encourages close looking as a way to uncover meaning and introduces Visual Thinking Strategies.
The Kennedy Museum of Art is located on the Ohio University campus in Athens, Ohio. Gallery hours are Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The Museum is closed on University holidays.
