Rio Upends Brescia 3-0
< < Back to rio-upends-brescia-3-0Rio Grande clinched its seventh victory of the season as it held down the Brescia University with a 3-0 victory Wednesday.
After 20 minutes of constant back-and-forth playing, the match was scoreless until sophomore Kasey Crow stepped up and scored twice in the span of two minutes for the RedStorm. Crow netted an unassisted marker 25 minutes into the match to put Rio up 1-0. Two minutes later, freshman defender Carrie Mathes fed Crow the ball to make it 2-0 for the RedStorm. Moments after Crow’s second goal, freshman Ashley Meek found an opening at the 32-minute mark to boost the RedStorm to 3-0 by intermission.
Rio’s momentum did not meet up to expectations for the second half according to coach Callum Morris.
“I was disappointed, though, that we didn’t keep playing the same way we finished the first half when we moved into the second,” said Morris. “We played down to the level of our competition.”
The match stayed at 3-0, the RedStorm stopped the Bearcats from making any kind of comeback with help from goalkeeper Allison Keeney’s three saves of the game.
Keeney completed her fifth shutout of the season for the RedStorm.
Rio sealed the game with a 6-3 edge in shots on goal and topped off with four corner kick opportunities.
“We got the result we wanted, especially after we played at Campbellsville the other day,” Morris said. “Allison kept another clean sheet in goal, which I think is a record, and the win gave us a new record, too.”
Rio hosts Shawnee State on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
