Ohio Field Hockey fell to Central Michigan on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2-1 with an intense overtime period during the home opener of newly resurfaced Pruitt Field.

“I think it was pretty physical, both teams did a good job getting after it very hard,” said head coach Neil Macmillan.

Just as expected, the Bobcats and Chippewas were evenly matched and it proved to be a close game. No points were scored until the 20th minute when Mid-American Conference Player of the Week, Luli Gomez Teruel, had her 10th goal of the season. Thanks to an assist from Franziska Schmiedel, Teruel got a pass to the left side of the box off of a penalty corner to put Ohio up 1-0.

Ohio fought long and hard to keep the Chippewas at bay and improve the score in its favor, but in the 46th minute, Jordyn Brengosz scored for CMU with an assist from Bailey McKeon as the ball was deflected in the short left corner of the goal.

The ‘Cats were unable to score for the remainder of regulation, sending the match into an overtime period.

With only one minute left in overtime, Mary Alice Moore scored for CMU at the top of the circle off of a penalty corner from Skylar Vannatta. This put the Chippewas up 2-1 and ended the game.

“I think the times we controlled we were happy with,” said Macmillan, “but they had too many periods of time, as far as we’re concerned, where they were in our end.”

Macmillan explained the deviation from their game plan didn’t serve the Bobcats well.

“Combining and passing the ball around, that’s usually our game plan,” he said, “but we didn’t quite stick to it for majority of the game there, which is a shame because we did some nice stuff the rest of the time.”

Ohio goalkeeper Brittany Walker made six saves during her 84-minute showing while only allowing two goals.

CMU led Ohio in shots 13-9 and had eight penalty corners compared to Ohio’s four.

Ohio is slated to play again this Wednesday night against rival Miami (Ohio) at 5 p.m. at Pruitt Field.
