W. Va. Report Card Shows Reading Score Increase, Math Scores Drop

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) – West Virginia was the only state in the nation to see its eighth-grade average reading score on the National Assessment of Educational Progress increase significantly from 2013.
The figures were released Wednesday by the U.S. Department of Education.
West Virginia’s average reading scores for eighth-graders grew by three points to 260. It was four points shy of the national average. Fourth-grade scores grew by one point to 216.
West Virginia, however, saw its fourth-grade average math score drop from 237 to 235, and it saw its eighth-grade average math score decrease from 274 to 271.
The numbers are based on tests given to nearly 600,000 students in about 14,000 schools. The NAEP is given to a sample of students every two years.
