Joe Burrow. Ryan Luehrman. Trae Williams. Defense.

Four reasons why the Athens Bulldogs are atop the TVC-Ohio, and four reasons why Athens defeated the Meigs Marauders.

Burrow threw for 221 yards and four touchdowns, Williams rushed for 169 yards and three scores, and the en fuego Athens Bulldogs routed the visiting Meigs Marauders, 61-13, Friday night.

The Bulldogs (9-0, 4-0 TVC-Ohio) took off for 34 unanswered points in the second quarter, entering the locker room with a 41-7 lead at the half. The scoring surge was due in part to robust defensive play and near-perfect offensive play.

Burrow threw for 212 yards and four touchdowns in the first half, with three of those scores and 136 of those yards going to Luehrman. Williams rushed for two scores and 111 yards on eight carries in the half.

On their first possession of the game, the Marauders (6-3, 3-1 TVC-Ohio) drove 64 yards. However, the Bulldogs’ defense forced a turnover on downs at the Athens’ 16 yard line.

Enter Burrow.

The junior drove his team 84 yards down the field, and Williams rushed in from 16 yards out to give the Bulldogs the 7-0 lead with 8:29 remaining in the first quarter.

Despite a three-and-out on the ensuing possession, the Marauders forced Burrow into coughing up the ball as he crossed midfield, regaining possession on their own 45 yard line. 11 plays later, Cody Bartrum snuck up the middle for a 2-yard score, allowing the Marauders to close the first quarter with a 7-7 tie.

Athens wasn’t having it. Every Meigs’ mishap resulted in a Bulldog touchdown.

Athens scored on its next five possessions of the half, while the Marauders were unable to cross midfield on their next four, resulting in four punts and a turnover on downs. The Bulldogs defense held Meigs to 147 total yards in the first half, and the Marauders compiled a mere 277 total yards on the night.

With the win, the Bulldogs take sole lead of the conference and finish the season with the TVC-Ohio crown. Meigs will finish the season as TVC-Ohio runner-up.

Meigs will close the regular season next Friday when they host the Alexander Spartans. The Athens Bulldogs look to remain perfect, as they play host to the Nelsonville-York Buckeyes next Friday night.
