Playoff Preview: 3 Philo vs. 6 John Glenn
< < Back to playoff-preview-3-philo-vs-6-john-glennJohn Glenn rides a three-game win streak into the postseason, earning a first round matchup with a well-known foe: the Philo Electrics. This is the second time in MVL history that two teams met in the regular season and the playoffs.
Back in week 5, John Glenn traveled to Philo and left with a 39-19 defeat.
After the Little Muskies suffered another loss to Tri-Valley in week 7, they defeated Maysville for a big boost in computer points.
Two wins later, John Glenn jumped into the playoffs, landing in the No. 6 seed. Running back, Blake Atkins has been a big factor in the team’s success the last few weeks.
Philo coach Dirk Lincicome said the Electrics would be wary of where Atkins lines up.
“We are also going to have to tackle well because he breaks tackles,” Lincicome said. “He runs hard. We need to contain him on the ground.”
Lincicome is working with the linebackers and defensive ends this week to make reads. The Electrics’ key to success will be to contain Atkins. Slowing him down will slow the Little Muskies’ offensive threat.
But John Glenn’s coach John Kelley has another plan in mind.
“We are a run first team and continue to do that,” Kelley said. “If we succeed, we will keep the ball out of their hands, which will be a factor in this game.”
That’s a must for the Little Muskies.
Philo quarterback and Gridiron Glory Player of the Year finalist Zak Sheridan is dangerous with the football. The John Glenn defense will have its hands full in dealing with the dual-threat quarterback’s arm and agility.
And while defenses are keying on Sheridan, there is always running back Nathan Delozier to look out for.
The Electrics offense has been efficient all year, despite a tough loss to Tri-Valley in week 10 with only a field goal to show.
Philo has a total of 332 points on the season. Kelley and the Little Muskies hope containing Sheridan and Delozier will cause the Philo offense to struggle.
Kickoff for the first round playoff game is scheduled for Friday night at 7:30.
