The River Valley Lady Raiders (3-0) started the 3rd quarter on a 12-0 run and never looked back as they defeated the Meigs Lady Marauders (1-3) 57-28 Thursday night to pick up their first conference win of the season.

River Valley showed a zone defense at times that allowed Meigs to get open three point shots, but the Lady Marauders struggled to knock them down. Sarah Dowell made the Lady Marauder’s sole bucket from three-point land with 5:16 left in the game contributing the lone in make in a 1-16 effort from deep.

“They ran a 2-2-1 to begin with, they dropped back to 1-3-1, then they went 2-3, then they went man.” Meigs head coach Scott Cleland said. “We have young girls, they need to learn to recognize what they’re in and adjust, that will come with time,”

These defensive schemes gave Meigs a fit all night as no Lady Marauder scored in double figures, with Kassidy Betzing scoring a team high nine points.

Erin Jackson and Tianna Qualls led the Lady Raiders scoring 11 and 10 points respectively. Jackson helped spark the game-deciding run in the 3rd quarter by hitting two big three-pointers and Qualls made a living in the paint all game long by grabbing four of her team-high nine rebounds on the offensive end of the floor.

Both teams fought hard to get 50/50 balls on the ground, but when it came to rebounding the Lady Raiders simply wanted it more. River Valley out rebounded Meigs 35-22 in the game and appeared to be quicker to balls off the rim.

“We didn’t box out very well in the second half,” Cleland said, “First half we did a great job doing that, second half we lost the fight.”

Despite the loss, Cleland is optimistic that his team will be able to shake off, “We’re just going to keep doing what were doing, we’re going to work hard, we’re going to stay prepared,” Cleland said.

Meigs will hope to grab its first TVC-Ohio win of the season when they take on the Alexander Lady Spartans on Dec. 7. River Valley hopes to continue its winning ways as they travel to Gallia on Dec. 5.
