Rio Grande To Battle Golden Bears
< < Back to rio-grande-battle-golden-bearsThe Rio Grande women’s basketball team is gearing up to come out of its weeklong hiatus Wednesday night as they travel to take on the West Virginia Tech Golden Bears.
The RedStorm are coming off of a strong win from their 79-65 performance against Wilberforce. Sophomore Sarah Bonar had a solid 20 points alongside Brooke Marcum’s 12 points and 11 rebounds in the past game, and the two are looking to put up the same or higher numbers in Wednesday’s matchup. The main player to watch for in this game, however, is Rio’s junior guard, Brianna Thomas. Thomas leads the team in both points and assists with 20.3 points per game and 6.0 assists per contest.
West Virginia Tech has not had as successful a season as the RedStorm, alternating wins and losses in its past four outings, losing its most recent game against Point Park with a final score of 85-76. The Golden Bears’ leading player is junior guard Nia Nolan, who averages 17.8 points and four assists per game.
In the first matchup against the RedStorm and the Golden Bears, the ladies from Rio Grande took charge of the court and won with a score of 81-73 in the championship game of the Bevo Francis Invitational. This win not only gave the RedStorm a leg up in the season series against West Virgina Tech, but led them to be the overall champions of their hosted invitational as well.
This non-conference matchup will take place in West Virgina Tech’s Baisi Athletic Center.
Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
