OU Journalism School Creates Foreign Correspondence Scholarship
< < Back toAs part of Ohio University's "The Promise Lives" campaign, Robert Stewart, director of the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, has created a new scholarship for students.
The gift, called the Maxine Stewart Foreign Correspondence Internship for Coverage of Culture and Religion Scholarhip, is named for Stewart's mother, who worked as a missionary in Thailand for almost 50 years.
Full-time, degree-seeking undergraduate students are eligible for the scholarship, as long as they have completed the foreign correspondence capstone class and pass an interview process from a selected interview committee.
“Some students want to cover hard news, but there are other aspects of life as well. I thought we ought to have a scholarship devoted specifically to the theme of culture and religion,” Stewart said to OU's Compass.
The money involved in the foreign correspondence internship has not been released.
“The main goal is for students to have an experience covering culture and religion in another part of the world, especially if this is something that they want to do in the future. This scholarship is designed to make that ambition possible,” Stewart said.
The university-wide scholarship campaign seeks to raise $450 million by June 30, 2015, and, according to the school, it has already raised more than $440 million.
