Fouls, Turnovers Trouble Lady Lancers Again

After a solid three quarters of basketball, fouls and turnovers troubled the Lady Lancers (5-17) as they entered the final quarter of play. Mixed with a South Gallia (7-16) offensive adjustment in the back, the Lady Rebels connected multiple shots that propelled them over Federal Hocking 45-38 and snag a tournament win.
Federal Hocking’s struggle with sloppy play and collapsing in the fourth quarter highlighted a problem that coach Jeremy Tolson says hurt the team the entire season.
“We make a lot of mistakes as far as passing goes and you know this year we had to concentrate on execution, playing with effort with execution. We turned the ball over an awful lot,” Tolson said. “We can play with just about anyone for three quarters and then we always give up that one quarter and it always kills us you know.”
The Lady Lancers totaled 17 fouls and 18 turnovers on the night. Federal Hocking also struggled to get to the rim, relying on 3-point shots. However the team failed to execute, shooting 23 percent from behind the arc.
South Gallia’s offensive adjustment near the end of the third quarter also allowed the Lady Rebels to steal the ball and create breakaways for easy layups. Mikayla Poling led South Gallia with five steals. Rounding out her night, Poling topped stat sheets with 18 points and contributed seven rebounds. Erin Evens notched 13 points for the Lady Rebels as well.
Hannah Dunfee carried the Lady Lancers with 10 points and four steals. Destiny Tabler almost reached a double-double, ending the night with nine points and nine rebounds.
South Gallia, now on a four-game win streak, moves on to play No. 1 seeded Waterford in the first round of the Division IV sectional tournament on Feb. 11 at Meigs.
