The Trimble Tomcats basketball program will enter 2014 with the girls team hoping to improve their 1-7 record and the boys team about to hit the ground running after a late start to their season.

BOYS

The Trimble boys began their season on Dec. 20, after multiple games were postponed due to the football team’s playoff run.

The Tomcats began their season with a tough test at South Gallia, who is undefeated in TVC-Hocking play.

The Tomcats were down from the start, as the Tomcats went into the second quarter down 23-15. After narrowing the lead down to 33-28 into the half, the Tomcats couldn’t get the job done in the second half. The Tomcats were outscored 46-31 in the second half and dropped their first contest against the South Gallia Rebels 79-59.

This past week, the Tomcats played two games and it looked like the boys are finding their groove.

On Dec. 23, Trimble traveled to Wahama, who was still trying to find their first win in the TVC-Hocking.

The Tomcats led the entire game and went into halftime with a 30-21 lead at halftime. The lead was extended at one point to 13 points during the third quarter, but a run by the White Falcons trimmed down the lead down to 41-37 going into the fourth quarter. The Tomcats extended their lead again as the White Falcons couldn’t catch up and the Tomcats came out with a 58-50 victory.

The Tomcats shot 45% (22-for-49) from the field during the win and Micah Couch led the Tomcats with 22 points, including 8 points from the charity stripe. Jacob Koons scored 12 points, while Jake Kish and Wyatt Bragg each added 11 points.

The Tomcats showed more signs of improvement has they played their first home game against the Morgan Raiders.

Trimble was down 16-13 after the half, but dominated the second quarter by holding Morgan to only four points in the second quarter and going into the half with a 30-20 lead. The Tomcats kept that lead for the rest of the game, as the Tomcats would win by a score of 55-46.

The Tomcats outshot the Raiders 42% to 30%, and were led once again by junior Micah Couch, who scored 15 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. Football players Konner Standley (10 points), Jake Kish (12 points) and Jacob Koons (14 points) proved that success can translate from the football field to the basketball court.

The Tomcats hope to continue their strong start as that travel to play first-place Waterford on Jan. 3, and playing at home against Federal Hocking on Jan. 4.

GIRLS

The Trimble girls only had one game this week after celebrating their first win at home against Wahama 42-13.

This week, the Lady Tomcats traveled to Vinton County to face the Lady Vikings on Dec. 30.

The Lady Tomcats were only down 10-7 after the first quarter, but the Lady Vikings extended their lead to 30-13 at halftime. The lead was only extended in the third quarter as the Lady Vikings outscored the Lady Tomcats 20-10 as the score was 50-23 going into the fourth quarter. The Lady Tomcats would end up falling against the Lady Vikings 65-28, falling to 1-7 on the season including a 1-4 mark in TVC-Hocking play.

Nikki Kish and Morgan Murphy led the Tomcats in scoring with eight points each. Tia Altier added six points and Emily McKee and Trista Lackey each scored three points for the Lady Tomcats.

The Lady Tomcats will travel to Waterford, who is undefeated in TVC-Hocking play, on Jan. 4, and will then play at home against South Gallia on Jan. 6.
