ESPN’s Tom Farrey to serve as keynote at OHIO’s 2016 Coaching Symposium
< < Back to espns-tom-farrey-to-serve-as-keynote-at-ohios-2016-coaching-symposiumThe 2016 Coaching Symposium, featuring award-winning ESPN journalist and youth sports expert Tom Farrey, will be held Saturday, April 2, on Ohio University’s Athens Campus.
Presented by the Ohio University Coaching Education Club, the symposium is open to coaches, athletes, parents and anyone interested in learning more about coaching. The event will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will provide participants access to some of OHIO’s world-class athletic venues.
The symposium kicks off in Peden Tower with morning sessions led by several Ohio University sports and coaching experts, including:
- David Carr, associate professor of recreation and sport pedagogy and coordinator of OHIO’s Coaching Education Program
- Sheri Huckleberry, assistant professor of recreation and sport pedagogy
- Bill Steffen, instructor of recreation and sport pedagogy
- Experts from OHIO’s Athletic Department
These experts will address a number of sports and coaching-related topics, including:
- Coaching methods and practices
- Parent involvement (the player-parent relationship and the role of coaches)
- Sports medicine (mental health and stress for developing athletes, concussions, and injury treatment)
- Strength and conditioning (motor skills development for youth athletes and nutrition)
The morning sessions will be followed by a keynote address by Tom Farrey, an award-winning journalist at ESPN who also serves as executive director of the Aspen Institute’s Sports and Society Program. Farrey is the author of “Game On: The All-American Race to Make Champions of Our Children” and is expected to talk about the current landscape of youth sports in the United States and what needs to change.
The afternoon will be dedicated to field/court sessions, which will allow participants to observe coaching sessions from multiple sports on the Athens Campus. Led by OHIO’s coaching education students, these sessions will be held at athletic facilities throughout the campus, including Walter Fieldhouse and the Ping Recreation Center.
