Ohioans on Medicare are saving more on insurance this year than last, thanks to programs that help explain different options to them.

According to the Department of Insurance, an enrollment assistance program helped over 160,000 Medicare patients save $16.4 million in 2013.

A record $8.69 million was saved during the fall open enrollment period alone, up from $7.5 million in 2012.

Lt. Gov. and Department of Insurance Director Mary Taylor said this is just the beginning; there are more improvements to come.

"Were pleased to be making progress as it relates to working with our senior citizens, but we’re going to continue to place an emphasis on answering their questions," Taylor said.

Since 2011, Ohio’s enrollment assistance program has jumped from 54th to 15th in the nation for outreach among states and territories, utilizing a toll free hotline, counseling and other various community events.
