Abortion Law Creators Seek To Clarify Disposal Rules

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Legislation in Ohio would require abortion providers to bury or cremate fetal remains, raising concerns about the privacy of women who undergo the procedure.
Sponsors of two House bills say their proposals seek to clarify vague disposal rules while ensuring the unborn are treated with dignity. However, opponents argue the legislation puts women’s privacy at risk by creating a paper trail of documents.
Ohio requires a permit to bury or cremate remains. Those permits can’t be issued until a death certificate is in the process of being filed. These documents include the mother’s name and location of the fetal death. They’re publicly available upon request.
Backers say the legislation isn’t intended to reveal a woman’s identity and changes are in the works.
A House committee is reviewing the bills Wednesday.
