The Nelsonville-York Buckeyes have spent much of this season searching for its identity. They may have found it Friday night. The Buckeyes tied its second-highest scoring total with 80 points, and defeated the Wellston Golden Rockets 80-57.

N-Y’s prolific attack was spearheaded by point guard Josh Fayette. The senior finished with 14 points, seven assists and six rebounds. Fayette penetrated the lane throughout the night and set up his teammates with countless opportunities. Junior Colt Adams and senior Cannon Kilbarger were two of the biggest beneficiaries of Fayette’s unselfishness, scoring 15 and 14 points respectively.

“Josh did a great job of distributing the ball tonight,” Nelsonville-York head coach Jay Kline said. “He got in deep a lot and instead of taking the shot he got others involved at the right time. He played a nice second half and a lot of it had to do with him.”

The Buckeyes came out in a full-court press, and would never trail the entire night. A back and forth first quarter ended in an 18-15 score. N-Y began the second quarter on a 7-2 run to open up a double digit lead. The orange and brown entered halftime leading 35-24.

The second half would prove to be all Buckeyes. N-Y came out on fire in the second half, and quickly held a 48-30 lead with just under five minutes in the third quarter. This lead would balloon to twenty points before the end of the quarter.

“At halftime we were talking about some things we needed to do different offensively as far as getting the ball to the mismatches,” Kline said. “We definitely started firing on all cylinders in the second half.”

The large lead allowed the Buckeyes to play all 15 of its players. The bench, coaches and fans all clearly enjoyed watching every player get an opportunity to contribute.

“To see a lot of people during who sacrifice so much in practice but not get many chances in games to come out and score, that’s fun,” Kline said. “It’s fun to see the whole team being involved not only on the bench, but on the floor too.”

Wellston was led on the offensive end by guard Braydon Womeldorf. The sophomore scored 11 points and added three rebounds.

Nelsonville-York improves to 8-6 overall and 2-4 in the TVC-Ohio with the victory. Wellston falls to 4-9 and 0-6 in the TVC-Ohio with the loss.

N-Y returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Eastern to face the Eagles. Wellston will next travel to Trimble on Jan. 28 to take on the Tomcats.
