Ohio Bill Proposes Changes to Campaign Finance Reporting

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – An Ohio lawmaker is proposing several changes to campaign finance reporting.
The Columbus Dispatch reports a bill introduced by Rep. John Becker would no longer require candidates who raise less than $2,000 to file a report. It would eliminate the need to list the date of a fundraising event and contribution date.
The Union Township Republican is seeking to simplify the state’s campaign finance laws and make them more modern. House Bill 502 would phase in electronic filing, starting with county-wide candidates in 2017 and trustees and school board candidates in 2018.
The bill would no longer require the secretary of state’s office to audit every candidate’s campaign finance filings. It also would stop requiring detailed reporting of income or expenses for a single entity totaling less than $100.
