After a short streak of wins the Athens Bulldogs baseball team is stuck in a four-game losing streak.

Just under halfway through the season the division 2 Bulldogs are sitting at 3 wins and 7 losses.

With only 17 games left in regular season play, Bulldog fans are curious about how this year’s team will be remembered.

At the beginning of the season head Coach Chris Stewart and Sr. Captain Hunter Mullins said that their biggest obstacles of the season would be getting “hits” and “guys on base.”

Since the first week of practice the Bulldogs have had several opportunities to work on their swing.

With sharper skills, the team is now focusing on the mental aspect of the game.

“If you don’t believe that you’re going to win every game you play and if you don’t believe that you’re better than every team you play regardless of what things look like on paper, you are already going into the game defeated,” said Stewart.

Regardless of their recent losses, Stewart believes that team will begin rising in the league.

“If we keep playing the way that we are supposed to play, I am fully confident that our time will come,” said Stewart.

“We’ve got guys that know the game of baseball, love the game of baseball, they are athletes and I think they can turn this thing around,” said Stewart.

Junior players Brendan Sano and Joseph Thomas are taking Coach Stewart’s words to heart and that is reflecting in their confidence on and off the field.

“Teams are already afraid of us, they see us walking around and they are scared,” said Sano.

“We are about to smash everyone in this second half no doubt; teams are about to get ‘shellacked’ as they say,” said Sano

Sano and Thomas will have multiple opportunities to back up what they say. The Bulldogs will play Jackson at home Wednesday.

They will play Vinton High School Thursday and Nelsonville on Friday.
