< < Back to ohio-faces-freezing-temperatures-after-snow-stormUPDATE 8:28 p.m. School districts across the region are cancelling or delaying classes ahead of sub-zero wind chill temperatures forecasted for Monday.
Athens City Schools, Nelsonville-York City Schools, Alexander Local Schools, Trimble Local Schools and Federal Hocking Local Schools are among districts that will be closed.
The National Weather Service has issued a wind chill watch for most of the region until Tuesday morning. Forecasters expect wind chills of minus-20 degrees or more.
Ohio University took the step of posting an alert on it's website and via text messages notifying the university community the Athens campus would be open Monday. The alert also said officials would be monitoring snow and ice accumulation levels and would post updates. It also urged employees to minimize travel and time outside by conducting business via email or teleconference if possible. Officials also provided safety tips for all employees when venturing or working outside. The university is said it is providing additional campus buses to cut down on wait times at CATS bus stops.
Extreme cold temperatures are expected to last until Wednesday.
Many Ohioans are starting to get a break from the snow, but brutal cold is coming right behind.
There was scattered snowfall and central and southeast Ohio roads were under snow emergency conditions urging caution or avoiding unnecessary driving. After new snow of 2 to 8 inches in much of the state Saturday, Sunday's forecasts called for smaller amounts as temperatures begin plummeting. Many areas will be in low single digits or below zero overnight, with gusting winds slapping many areas with wind chills of minus-20 degrees or worse in the mornings ahead.
