One Arrested, One Hospitalized in Nelsonville Shooting

Deputies from the Athens County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to 801 Doolittle Road in Nelsonville on a report of a shooting Tuesday evening at about 6 p.m.
Steven Woods, 75, was found at the scene along with his wife, Sylvia Woods, 69, and several family members, according to a release from the sheriff’s office.
Sylvia Woods was found to have multiple gunshot wounds to her “buttocks area,” the release stated, and was transported to OhioHealth O’Bleness Hospital and transferred to Grant Hospital.
“Initially, sheriff’s deputies were told this shooting was accidental,” the release stated. “After further investigation, it appears it is most likely not an accidental shooting.”
Steven Woods was taken to O’Bleness for psychological evaluation, but was eventually medically cleared. After being interviewed by deputies, he was arrested on one count of felonious assault.
He was then transported to the Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail. An initial court date is scheduled in Athens County Municipal Court on Thursday, according to the jail database.
