Athens County Auditor Jill Thompson announced her re-election Tuesday as she filed her nominating petitions with the Athens County Board of Elections.

Thompson, who grew up on an Athens County farm, said her independence from the courthouse crowd serves the taxpayers well.

“Everybody knows I’m watching the dollars, and they know I’ll take a stand,” she said. “The only people I owe are the people of this county. I work for them.”

During her time in office, Thompson said she has also significantly expanded the outreach of her office to make homeowners aware of real estate tax breaks people often don’t realize they qualify for.

“Folks around here need a break, and they shouldn’t have to do their own research to find it. I like being out in the community and letting people know,” she said.

Thompson was elected president of the County Auditors’ Association of Ohio in 2010. She has also recently been elected to a full term on the board of the Government Finance Officers Association by the membership.

As auditor, Thompson has received the Award of Financial Reporting Achievement from the Government Finance Officers Association, the Distinguished Auditor’s Award from the CAAO on three separate occasions, and has been recognized by the Auditor of State’s office for Excellence in Financial Accountability.

Thompson has also received recognition as a Paul Harris Fellow from the Athens Rotary Club. Thompson is the former chairperson of the Correction Commission of Southeastern Ohio, where she currently sits on the Finance Committee and has been active on implementing a new funding strategy. She is a board member of the Athens County Farm Bureau and has served 12 years on the Board of the United Seniors of Athens County. Thompson is active in the business community and is a member of the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce.

Last year, she earned her Master’s of Financial Economics at Ohio University and graduated with honors. She is member of the academic honor society, Phi Kappa Phi.

She lives in The Plains with her husband Trevis and their three sons. She has been returned to office by the voters three times.
