Circleville Looking To Raise Income Tax To Pay For Street Repairs

Circleville City Council is looking to address the street problem with changes to the local income tax laws currently in place.
According to Circleville Today, council voted unanimously Tuesday to send the new tax ordinance to the voters for the May 6 primary election. The new ordinance will eliminate the commuter tax and raise the income tax on money earned by .5 percent in the city, from 1.5 percent to 2 percent.
Of that .5 percent increase, .1 percent will go to fire, police and other personnel to replace the commuter tax while the remaining .4 percent will be used for road improvements and other service department issues.
Auditor Gayle Spanger says the .4 percent increase would generate about $1.2 million for streets.
If passed, the new tax would go into effect Jan. 1, 2015.
