Athens Police Investigate Alleged Student Drug Trafficking

The Athens Police Department raided a Washington Street residence on Friday as part of an investigation into alleged drug trafficking by Ohio University students, a report stated.
A search warrant was executed at 211 W. Washington Street in Athens, according to release by the Fairfield-Hocking-Athens Major Crimes Unit.
“This was just one part of an ongoing investigation into trafficking in illegal drugs within the Ohio University student population, and area juveniles,” the release stated.
The Athens County Sheriff’s Department’s Special Response Team was contacted for assistance because investigators were notified of a possible firearm at the residence.
A firearm was not found after law enforcement entered the house, but four residents and one non-resident were interviewed during the course of the investigation.
“Evidence of drug trafficking to include but not limited to marijuana, digital scales and almost $2,500 in case was recovered,” according to the release.
A concealed carry permit held by one of the residents was revoked during the investigation, and a vehicle “documented as being used to deliver illegal drugs” was seized, investigators stated.
The release did not indicate any arrests made during the Friday raid, but said the investigation is ongoing on “this and other related cases.”
Athens Police Chief Tom Pyle and Athens County Sheriff Rodney Smith were unavailable for comment on Monday.
