Yates’ Strong Relief Keys Rio Win
< < Back to yates-strong-relief-keys-rio-winThe Rio Grande RedStorm brought in all three of their runs in the second inning to defeat Webber International 3-1 on Monday in Babson Park, Fla. Kirk Yates relieved starting pitcher Eric Ford in the fifth inning and picked up three strikeouts in five innings without allowing a run.
“(Yates) was a pleasant surprise,” said Rio Grande Head Coach Brad Warnimont. “He threw extremely well and had an unbelievable slider.”
Rob Lane surrendered all of the Warrior’s runs in the second and the WIU offense just couldn’t generate enough runs, especially with Yates throwing.
Kevin Arroyo hit a single that brought in Luis Jimenez and Carlos Flores, who had hit back-to-back singles to open up the inning. Daryn Lewis bunted to advance Jimenez and Flores into scoring position, and Arroyo was able to single into right center to bring them home.
After a fly-out from Marcus Makuch, Grant Tamane singled up the middle to bring in Arroyo and make the score 3-0.
WIU scored its lone run in the 4th inning when Dylan Price and Cody Warren combined for a pair of singles that brought home Austin Aubuchon. Ford was able to keep the game in control, escaping multiple innings with runners in scoring position, while only allowing a the one run.
The RedStorm (7-11) are currently riding a three game win streak and look to continue their winning ways when they play Warner College on Tuesday. Rio Grande pitcher Ryan Cristophel will get the start against a tough war-weather squad.
Warnimont is happy with the win streak but knows none of these wins come easy, especially against the Floridian teams.
“We won three, they lost four, but you could throw all that out the window.”
