COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Ohio’s elections chief says more voters cast their ballots ahead of Election Day this year compared with the same point in the last presidential election.

Republican Secretary of State Jon Husted says Ohio saw a bump of nearly 11,000 early votes cast compared with 2012. That number will increase as additional mailed absentee ballots arrive after Tuesday.

Almost 1.8 million ballots have been cast in the state, which has 7.8 million registered voters. About 5.6 million people voted in the last presidential election.

Husted said Monday in Columbus absentee ballots cast by mail were down about 4 percent compared with 2012. But he says early ballots cast in person saw a roughly 10 percent increase.

Ohio residents can vote absentee by mail or in person without having to give a reason.
