Pios Split Doubleheader With La Roche
< < Back to pios-split-doubleheader-la-rocheGame One: After a change in location, the No. 11 Marietta College Pioneers split a doubleheader against the La Roche College Redhawks. The games were originally scheduled to be played at Don Schaly Stadium for Marietta’s home opener, but the two teams ended up playing at La Roche’s home turf in Pittsburgh.
Along with scoring seven runs in the first game, the Pioneers’ pitching was dominant. Starting pitcher Jason Byers threw three perfect innings and had four strikeouts in rout to his third win of the season.
Christian Hernstine relieved Byers in the fourth and threw two innings of one-hit baseball. Mitch McNabb threw the final two innings of the 7-1 victory and gave up a run on three hits.
The Pioneers had three multi-run innings, scoring two in the first, three in the third and two in the fifth. Three of the seven runs scored by the Etta Express were of the unearned variety.
Josh Ungerbuehler led the offense in the first game by going one for three with three RBIs and a run scored.
Game Two: A four-run fourth and a complete game effort from Walt Hadjuk led the Redhawks past the Pioneers, 6-3.
Going into the fourth, Marietta led La Roche 3-1. The Redhawks scored their second run of game on a sacrifice fly and had a runner on with two outs. But the Pioneers’ defense struggled the rest of the inning. After a two-out error, La Roche went on to score three unearned runs to take a 5-3 lead.
Hadjuk shut down the Pioneer offense during the final three innings, giving up just three hits and striking out three down the stretch.
The Pioneers (9-4) will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Otterbein for their Ohio Athletic Conference opener.
