Voters in Ross county have rejected a 1.4 mill levy that would have funded programs in the Health District, according to unofficial results.
15,249 voters cast ballots against the increase while 12,765 voted in favor of it.
The increased funding would have gone towards current programs like family planning services and the sexually transmitted diseases clinic.
The district’s Project D.A.W.N., another program, was designed to reduce opioid abuse in the region.
According to the Chillicothe Gazette in June, some of these unmandated public health services would face termination without voter support.
The failed levy would have cost the owner of a home valued at $100,000 less than $50 per year and it would have raised about $600,000 for the health district annually.
The 1.4-mil levy was a replacement of the 1-mill levy in 1992 and an addition of 0.4 mil.
Republican Dwight A. Garrett will take his seat as county commissioner. He received 12,905 votes while his opponents, Democrat Tom Holdren and Philip Gray received 11,420 and 3,704 votes respectively.
Republican George W. Lavender Jr. will maintain his position as sheriff. He won the majority of the ballot with 18,726 votes. His opponents, Democrat Donald T. Hayburn and Brady C. Ratzlaff received 5,569 and 4,188 respectively, according to the unofficial results.
Among requests for Sunday alcohol sales, voters in Jefferson Township voted to allow the sale of beer and wine at a local Quick One Stop. In addition, unofficial results show that voters will allow Quick Stop, Los Mariachis in Chillicothe to sell alcohol on Sundays. However, Izzy’s in Franklin South and Londonderry 1st Stop in Liberty East were both denied permission to sell alcohol on Sundays as shown by the unofficial results.
In Concord Township, voters rejected 0.5 mil 5-year cemetery levy 1,037 to 794. In contrast, voters passed a 0.4 mil cemetery levy in Scioto Township, 5,162 to 5,115.
Voters in Springfield Township passed a 2.5 mil levy to cover fire and EMS services. 736 were in favor of the levy compared to 348 against it.
Paxton Township and Frankfort will both be getting their replacement levies to cover current expenses. Paxton’s is 1.4 mills while Frankfort’s is 1.8. 395 voted for it and 298 voted against it in Frankfort; 221 voted in favor of the levy while 216 voted against.
