Ohio Snaps Losing Streak With 5-3 Win
< < Back to ohio-snaps-losing-streak-5-3-winOhio looked like a different team offensively as it had 16 hits, setting a season high. The Bobcats outhit the Western Michigan Broncos 16-5 on their way to a 5-3 victory.
It wasn’t just the offense that powered the ‘Cats to victory as Jake Roehn threw an impressive eight innings. His stat line was just as impressive as he only allowed four hits, three runs (none of which were earned), and four strikeouts. Out of the 122 pitches he threw, Roehn was able to find the strike zone 78 times.
“It feels great. We knew we had it in us, but we were just going through a rough time,” Roehn said. “Things weren’t going our way and thankfully tonight they started to go in our favor. Getting the win was pretty huge.”
The Bobcats had an impressive fourth inning at the plate as they rattled off four hits and scored three runs. Two of the three runs were knocked in by Jake Madsen and John Adryan on singles to right field. The three-run inning gave the ‘Cats a 4-3 lead at the time.
However, the Broncos quickly answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth. All of the runs were unearned as Tyler Finkler had a tough inning in the field getting charged with three errors.
Corey Wells came on in the closer role in the bottom of the ninth inning and picked up his third save of the season. He gave up a leadoff single and a stolen base, but retired the next three batters, two of which he struck out.
“Beyond the fact that we won, we played well,” head coach Rob Smith said. “We had a couple errors in the field that we’d like to have back. But, we pitched well and we made plays when we needed to make them.”
Ohio’s still struggled to score runs as they stranded five runners in the first two innings, including leaving the bases juiced in the first. They ended up stranding 11 total runners on base.
While it is Ohio’s first win in Bob Wren Stadium it will count as a road victory because the series was originally supposed to be played in Kalamazoo, Mich.
