Update 10:30 a.m. — The victim of a reported shooting on Athens’ west side is out of surgery and recovering in the Intensive Care Unit of a Huntington hospital, according to the man’s mother.

Alex D.J. Andrews, 29, an Athens resident and owner of Thunderbunny Tattoo Parlor, was reportedly shot at about 2 a.m. Thursday at 20 Brown Avenue, according to his mother, Terri Jean.

“He was home last night making a snack, and he was shot through his kitchen window,” Jean told WOUB while at St. Mary’s Hospital with her son.

Two women were also at the home, according to Jean.

Andrews had injuries to his face, neck, chest and abdomen, but is expected to recover, she said.

Andrews was shot with buckshot, but was awake after the shooting to talk to police.

“He told police he has no idea why someone would shoot him,” Jean said.

Andrews is a longtime resident of Athens and a graduate of Alexander High School.

His mother wants word of the shooting to spread so that the shooter will be found.

“I don’t think it was random, myself,” Jean said. “If anyone saw anything suspicious or anyone walking around at that time, they should tell police.”

Athens Police Chief Tom Pyle had no further updates on the investigation as of Thursday morning, except that police have confirmed the injury was not self-inflicted.

An Athens man has been hospitalized after a reported shooting on the west side of the city.

Athens Police Department officers responded at about 2 a.m. today to a call of an explosion on Brown Avenue.

“Upon arrival, it was determined a male had been the victim of a shooting,” a release from the police department stated.

The male was transported by ambulance to OhioHealth O’Bleness Hospital, and then was reportedly transported to a hospital in Huntington. Hospital officials were not available to confirm the male’s condition.

Police say the investigation into the shooting is ongoing, but “appears to be an isolated incident” with “no known threat to the public.”

Information about the incident can be reported to the Athens police at (740) 592-3313.
