Peoples Bank Theatre to Host Songwriting In the Spotlight
< < Back to peoples-bank-theatre-to-host-songwriting-in-the-spotlightThe historic Peoples Bank Theatre in downtown Marietta is partnering with American Public Television’s Songs at the Center to host Songwriting in the Spotlight. This free songwriting workshop will take place 10 a.m. – 5:45 p.m. on Saturday, March 25, and end with a free concert at 8 p.m.
While the day’s first two workshops are geared toward educators and musical therapists, anyone is welcome to attend. All workshops are open to everyone. Participants do not have to be songwriters, nor do they need to know how to play an instrument.
“You do not have to be a songwriter, but you will certainly end up becoming one before you leave,” says Parkersburg singer/songwriter Todd Burge, who is coordinating the day’s workshops. “You also don’t have to play an instrument or know how to play an instrument to attend these workshops. Many find they can be songwriters without even knowing how to play an instrument at all.”
The workshop schedule includes:
10 a.m. – 11 a.m.: How to Teach Songwriting in School Settings, with Ashland University music educator and composer Jim Shaw.
11:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.: Music and 21st Century Learning Skills (Critical Thinking, Creative Thinking, Collaborating, Communicating), with Jim Shaw.
12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.: Cooking Up a Song from Scratch, with Mountain Stage Radio Show musical director Ron Sowell.
2:15 p.m. – 3:15 p.m.: How I Write One Song Every Day!, with Todd Burge.
3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.: How to Write Comedic Songs and Parodies, with Eric Gnezda, creator, host and producer of Songs at the Center.
4:45 p.m. – 5:45 p.m.: From Idea to I Did It, with Gene Castelli, songwriter and Columbus Chapter Co-Coordinator of the Nashville Songwriters Association International.
The day will conclude with a free concert at 8 p.m. showcasing the results of the day’s workshop.
Songwriting in the Spotlight is made possible in part by state tax dollars allocated by the Ohio Legislature to the Ohio Arts Council (OAC). The OAC is a state agency that funds and supports quality arts experiences to strengthen Ohio communities culturally, educationally, and economically.
