The Daily Independent reports the audit of Sheriff Keith Cooper’s 2015 financial statement released Tuesday found that Cooper withdrew $12,300 in cash from the drug enforcement account without maintaining documentation to show how the money was used.
Mike Harmon, Kentucky’s auditor of public accounts, says the lack of supporting documentation, which is required by law, means there’s no way to determine if the disbursements and cash payments were for law enforcement or personal expenses.
Cooper pushed back in a statement, saying that procuring receipts would endanger the undercover investigations funded by the account.
Attorney General Andy Beshear’s spokesman confirmed his office will review the audit.
