Police Warn Parents: Hot Cars and Kids Don’t Mix

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) – Kentucky State Police are warning parents that hot cars and kids don’t mix.
Temperatures are expected to rise into the 90s this week, and police are warning parents and caregivers not to leave children alone in vehicles.
Police spokesman Lt. Michael Webb says a child’s body heats up three to five times quicker than an adult’s. In addition, the temperature in a car can rise by 19 degrees in 10 minutes. Webb said the combination can be deadly very quickly.
He cautioned that it’s easy for adults to get distracted and forget about having a child in their vehicle. He recommended adults use something to remind them that a child is in the vehicle and that they conduct a visual check before leaving it.
Webb says adults who leave children under 8 in a hot vehicle could face criminal charges.
