River City Players Present “The Drowsy Chaperone”
< < Back to river-city-players-present-drowsy-chaperoneThe River City Players Community Theatre Group will bring the energetic Tony Award-winning musical comedy The Drowsy Chaperone to life this weekend, with shows on Aug. 8 and 9.
When The Man in the Chair, a reclusive Broadway fanatic, gives his favorite record a spin, the audience is transported into the “decadent world of the 1920s” and the fictional musical, The Drowsy Chaperone.
The show-within-a-show revolves around the wedding of glamorous showgirl, Janet Van De Graaf, to the dashing and debonair Robert Martin.
Janet’s harried producer, Feldzieg, is intent on stopping the wedding and convincing Janet to stay in his show, at the urging of two gangsters (posing as pastry chefs) who have been hired by one of Feldzieg’s investors.
Mix-ups and mayhem ensue as other zany characters are thrown into the mix, including a bumbling Latin lover, a forgetful dowager and her unruffled English butler, a bubble-headed chorus girl, a bold and brash aviatrix, Robert’s flustered best man and Janet’s Drowsy (i.e. tipsy) Chaperone.
The Man offers hilarious commentary and tidbits of trivia throughout, demonstrating the influence that musicals can have on those who adore them.
The show, under the direction of Amy Perrin, features talent from around the area and will be performed at Meigs High School in Pomeroy on Aug. 8 and 9 at 7 p.m.
Tickets are $10 and may be purchased in advance at The Fabric Shop in Pomeroy and at the door prior to the show.
