Athens Seeks Bicycle Friendly Certification
< < Back to ?p=19563A group of bike-centric cyclists cruised through Athens Thursday morning.
The Athens Bicycle Club organized a public event featuring bicycle expert Stephen Clark from the American League of Bicyclists. Clark tours various cities around the country studying infastructure and offering insights to improve. The League then grants cities Bike Friendly certification later on.
Athens city officials are also involved. Councilwoman Jennifer Cochran stated Clark was impressed with the Richland roundabout and bike path. Cochran emphasised the city's role in working to ensure bike safety. "The city was receptive in getting out some of the city employees and elected offcials and community members for this meeting today to look at what we already have in place as far as infastructure."
Athens Bicycle Club owner Pete Kostes planned the meeting. "I think the bike path is a great way to encourage cycling, but I would love to see more arteries off of that." Kostes stated. Kostes explained the benifits of encouraging a biking community. The lifestyle promotes healthy living and decreases dependecy on cars.
Cochran suggested improved bike safety and routing could also improve traffic and parking problems in uptown Athens.
