Teachers in a suburban Columbus district are taking to the picket lines after rejecting their school board's final contract offer.

The Reynoldsburg teachers streamed out a meeting late Thursday with the strike announcement and planned to begin picketing Friday morning. About two dozen were demonstrating outside school board offices before dawn.

The Columbus Dispatch reports the two sides met for about four hours Thursday without progress. The sticky issues include class sizes and merit-based raises.

Board of Education President Andy Swope says "we did what we could to keep teachers from striking."

The district has hired substitute teachers and additional security.

About 360 union members are striking. The district serves about 7,000 students.
