This Honors Tutorial College student thesis exhibition explores how selected contemporary artists have been affected by censorship after the height of the ”culture wars” (1980s to 1990s) in the United States. This one-room exhibition focuses on four artists who address social issues in their work, most prominently race and sexuality. The controversial nature of these and many other works aroused heated debate on the national level over the role of art as social criticism, and the provocative means employed by artists. The artists featured in this exhibition are Kara Walker, Sue Coe, David Wojnarowicz and John Sims.
