Game Preview: Point Pleasant, Parkersburg South Ready For Battle With Class AAA Playoff Implications
< < Back to game-preview-point-pleasant-parkersburg-south-ready-battle-class-aaa-playoff-implicationsThis season the Point Pleasant Big Blacks are on a five-game winning streak to begin the season and are looking to keep the streak going on Friday night against Parkersburg South.
Defense has been the key for the Big Black victories, as the team has allowed just 25 points this season, an average of just five points per game.
With all that being said, Point Pleasant coach David Darst is being careful not to take Parkersburg South lightly.
“This is the second year that [Parkersburg South coach Mike Eddy] has been there and I think he finally has their athletes where he needs them,” said Darst.
The Patriots have their work cut out for them in this Week 6 matchup. Although Point Pleasant is the smallest team in West Virginia’s AAA division, Parkersburg South is coming off a bye week and before that an easy 49-7 victory over the Warren Warriors.
According to Coach Mike Eddy, Parkersburg South used the bye week to their advantage.
“We’ve tried to take some time to allow our kids to recoup – it’s been a busy season,” he said. “But just going back and hitting the basics and working on fundamentals is what we’ve been doing in the off week.”
Last season the Patriots finished with a 2-8 record. After their first four games of 2014 they stand at 3-1.
Eddy said the team is moving in the right direction.
“I think it really kind of solidifies to our players that the way we are doing things actually works,” he said. “Being able to get off to a good start has allowed the kids to believe in what we’re doing and to believe in each other.”
Parkersburg South will be paying attention to key players on the other side of the ball.
“[Point Pleasant has] a lot of good football players down there,” Eddy said. “Their running back [Cody Mitchell] is getting a lot of attention but they have a lot of guys that make big plays for them and some nice looking lineman giving him space up front and when he gets space he’s hard to tackle.”
But Point Pleasant has a counter-attack set up to try to keep more points on their side of the scoreboard. Darst explained that the team needs to play solid defense again, stop the big plays, and try to keep everything in front of them.
Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. this Friday at Point Pleasant.
