Glouster Police Say Man Shot At Officers

A Glouster man is in custody after leading police on a pursuit through Glouster and shooting at police officers.
The Glouster Police Department is investigating an "active shooter situation" that began late Tuesday evening, that started with the Glouster police attempting to execute arrest warrants on Matthew Arno.
"He took off, he had a handgun and he shot at two of my police officers," Glouster Mayor Miles Wolf told The Messenger on Tuesday.
The first of the shots was allegedly fired when police attempted to serve the warrants to Arno on Summit Street. Officers observed Arno running away, allegedly brandishing a firearm.
Police pursued him to a residence on Republic Avenue, which he entered and refused to come out of when police arrived on the scene, Wolf said. Another shot was allegedly fired shortly after Arno entered the home.
"Officers immediately secured the neighborhood and asked for assistance from the Athens County Sheriff's (Office) and the Special Response Team," Wolf said in a news release sent late Tuesday.
Lt. Aaron Maynard, a negotiator from the Athens County Sheriff's Office's Special Response Team talked the man out of the home, according to Athens County Interim Sheriff Rodney Smith, and Arno was taken into custody without further incident.
A woman was also found to be in the residence, and was taken to OhioHealth O'Bleness Hospital for "precautionary reasons," Wolf said.
"It isn't clear whether she was being held against her will or not," Wolf said.
No major injuries were reported, and Arno was being taken to the Glouster Police Department for questioning before being transported to the Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail, according to Wolf.
Wolf declined to discuss the charges named in the warrant nor potential charges that the man could face as part of the Tuesday night incident.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation was requested to process the scene, Wolf said, and were on their way to Glouster at about 9 p.m.
"This is how a situation such as this is supposed to end," Wolf wrote in the release.
