Recap: Parkersburg Shuts Down Woodrow Wilson On Way To 24-0 Victory [VIDEO]
< < Back to recap-parkersburg-shuts-down-woodrow-wilson-way-24-0-victoryOn a cold and rainy Friday night, the Parkersburg Big Reds dominated both sides of the ball against the Woodrow Wilson Flying Eagles and came away with a convincing 24-0 victory.
Woodrow Wilson (3-3) came into the game fired up, as on the first play from scrimmage for Parkersburg, Wilson safety Brett Osborne read the play and intercepted the deep pass to give the Flying Eagles the ball early.
Following the interception, the Flying Eagles marched the ball 71 yards down the field on 16 plays, but couldn’t punch the ball in from the 9-yard line. After taking over six minutes off the clock, Woodrow Wilson went for it on fourth down, but the pass fell incomplete and the Big Reds had the ball back.
Parkersburg (3-3) couldn’t capitalize on the big defensive stop, as they were forced to punt after a quick three-and-out. Their defense stepped up again on the next possession, forcing Woodrow Wilson into a three-and-out of their own and actually pushing them back 14 yards thanks to two sacks.
After another quick possession from the Big Reds, the Flying Eagles had the ball back. However, on the second play of the drive, they coughed up the ball on a fumble, and Parkersburg was all over it, giving the ball back to their offense.
On the ensuing drive, the Big Reds finally got some momentum going as they drove the ball down to the Wilson 13 yard-line. Big Reds quarterback Josh Trembly dropped back and delivered a beautiful, lofted ball to the back of the end zone. Brannon Turner made a tiptoe catch to cap off the seven-play, 38-yard drive. After a missed extra point by Josh Roney, the Big Reds had the 6-0 advantage.
Parkersburg’s defense came up with yet another stop on defense and forced a punt back to their offense. The offense didn’t waste any time adding to their lead, as Trembly delivered a 56-yard strike to Austin Life on the third play of the drive. That play accounted for just over half of Trembly’s 110 passing yards on the night. After a failed two-point conversion attempt, the score was 12-0 with 4:05 left in the opening half.
The Flying Eagles were looking to cut into the lead on their next possession, but the Parkersburg defense would have none of it. Woodrow Wilson quarterback Brent Osborne dropped back and fired the ball down the field, but Parkersburg’s Terrance Tate came up with the diving interception.
Heading into halftime up 12-0, the Big Reds came out and could not get anything going to extend their lead and put the game away. Luckily for them, their defense continued to shut down a Woodrow Wilson offense that looked a step slow all night.
After a scoreless third quarter, Parkersburg entered the final stanza and put the game out of reach. Their first score came on a five-yard pass from Trembly to Corey Burdette three minutes into the quarter. Along with the touchdown reception, Burdette also accounted for 76 yards on 17 carries. Another failed two-point conversion later, and the game was 18-0.
On Woodrow Wilson’s next possession, the Big Red defense stepped up once again. Chase Shank picked up a Flying Eagle fumble and took it to the house from 43 yards out. That score put the nail in the coffin for the Flying Eagles, who couldn’t get anything going to put a dent in the score.
The Parkersburg defense held the Flying Eagles to just 130 yards of total offense on the night while coming up with six takeaways. On the other side of the ball, the Big Reds were racked up a solid 257 yards of offense, including 147 on the ground.
Parkersburg will travel to Huntington (3-3) next week to take on the Highlanders.
