Mitchell Leaves Game As Point Pleasant Tops Jefferson
< < Back to mitchell-leaves-game-point-pleasant-tops-jeffersonGridiron Glory Player of the Year Candidate Cody Mitchell went down with a shoulder injury with one minute left in the first quarter. Prior the injury, he reeled in a 50-yard receiving touchdown.
Mitchell had only one rush for two yards, but the offense was able to pick up the slack. Led by the standout play of Aden Yates, who finished with 242 passing yards and four touchdowns along with 67 yards on the ground, the Big Blacks rolled Jefferson 38-20.
Jon Peterson caught three passes for 67 yards and a touchdown, but it was his defense that made him standout today. The senior had multiple sacks and made himself at home in Jefferson’s backfield.
Peterson and company quelled the Jefferson rushing attack. The team had 21 rushing attempts for an astonishing negative 48 yards rushing. Quarterback Andrew King finished with 19 rushes for negative 60 yards. It was clear, Jefferson’s plan was to spread the field out, and pitch the ball around. Even though King didn’t find success, he piled up 358 passing yards and three touchdowns.
Jefferson’s Christian Johnson had himself a game, only catching five passes, but making the most of those receptions. The junior had 172 yards and two touchdowns of 70 and 65 yards respectively.
The Big Blacks were only up 7-0 before Cody Mitchell left the game after a punt return. Once he was taken off the field, the offense scored two more times in the second quarter to make it 21-0. Point Pleasant put another touchdown on the board, with a lengthy drive to begin the second half.
20 unanswered Jefferson points put the Cougars back in contention, but a Point Pleasant field goal put the score at 31-20, adding some cushioning to the lead. A late touchdown by the Big Blacks ended any sort of comeback by the Cougars.
For Point Pleasant (10-0), the team marches on with a matchup against the winner of Buckannon-Upshur vs. Martinsburg.
