Ohio Treasurer Takes Checkbook Online

Ohio's treasurer has launched the state's first online checkbook, a searchable website of individual state expenses going back to 2008.
About 30 states have gone digital with their spending information, but Republican Josh Mandel (man-DEHL') says he believes the interactive nature of Ohio's site and the amount of information provides will become a model for the nation.
The second-term treasurer from suburban Cleveland tells The Associated Press that the site's functionality is better than the U.S. Public Interest Research Group's three highest-rated sites in Indiana, Oregon and Florida.
The project took about two years and cost $814,000.
It is Mandel's second effort to digitize publicly available financial data for use by the public. Omissions and mistakes with a database of public salaries were later corrected.
