Lady Wildcats Shut Down Glenwood To Win District Title
< < Back to ?p=212251With only three seconds left in the first quarter, the Waterford Lady Wildcats already held a commanding lead over the Glenwood Lady Tigers, but they weren’t done in the quarter yet. The in-bounds pass came in and the ball found Alli Kerns hands, and she calmly rose up and took the shot as time expired.
Swish.
That was the kind of night that the Lady Wildcats would have, as they didn’t let up from the tip off, blowing the Lady Tigers off the floor at Jackson High School 55-22, claiming their 6th straight District Title.
It was clear what the game plan was for defending the Lady Tigers great three point shooting: full court press.
“It is a lot easier to keep a team scrambling than have them come down and set up and run an offense,” Coach Jerry Close examined their teams game plan after their win.
The pestering defense worked, forcing turnover after turnover and locking down the Lady Tigers three point shooting, as they shot 11% from three.
On the offensive side of the ball, the Lady Wildcats were able to get the ball moving, allowing open shots for their shooters and open lanes to the hoop as the game went on.
Senior’s Alli Kern and Megan Ball were the driving force behind Waterford’s offensive output yet again, as Kerns scored a team high 21 points, also grabbing 8 rebounds, and Megan Ball chipped in 15 points and 7 rebounds, even with her early foul troubles. Just these two players alone outscored the entire Glenwood team 36-22.
Even though this team has been a constant in this District Championship game, their coach is always happy when they win.
“Anytime you win a championship, its great,” Coach Close reflected, “You tell the kids to enjoy every one of them.”
The Waterford Lady Wildcats will continue postseason play when the take on Notre Dame on March 8th in Jackson High School with tip off at 7:00 pm.
