MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) – West Virginia University says it has banned five fraternities from campus for at least 10 years.

The Charleston Gazette-Mail reports Alpha Sigma Phi, Kappa Alpha Order, Phi Sigma Kappa, Sigma Chi and Theta Chi can no longer participate in school sanctioned events. They also cannot use the school’s logo and are not eligible for school grants.

The fraternities wrote letters to become independent of the school in August. They were upset by regulations prompted by an August university report that found instances of sexual misconduct, hazing and substance abuse.

A Thursday school statement says the fraternities also were upset by restrictions implemented in the wake of a 2014 death of a freshman at a fraternity event. Those included a ban on recruiting first semester freshmen.
