Funding Helps W.Va. Airport Recover Costs of Landslide Cleanup

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Federal funding will help a West Virginia airport recover the costs of cleaning up after a 2015 landslide.
U.S. Sens. Shelley Moore Capito and Joe Manchin announced the $3.2 million grant Monday from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for Yeager Airport in Charleston.
A safety overrun area near the end of the airport’s main runway partially collapsed. No one was injured. The landslide took out a church, an unoccupied home and power lines and forced residents out of a few dozen homes.
It took nearly two years to remove earth, rocks and debris from the Kanawha County road below the hilltop airport. Several homes acquired by the airport along the road were torn down.
The grant brings to $25 million the total amount of federal funds appropriated for the cleanup.
