ATHENS, OH – Former WOUB student and Ohio University Alumna Anna Mitchell hosts an international morning radio program. With her global reach, an argument can be made that she is one of the most famous broadcast alumni to come out of Ohio University, but when you say that to her, she laughs.
“I’ve never really thought of it that way,” said Mitchell, who graduated in 2006 with degrees in Journalism and History. “I am doing what I love for a network I am passionate about. It’s still amazing for me to think that people outside of Cincinnati can hear my program.”
Mitchell is the producer and one of the hosts of the Son Rise Morning Show which airs at 6 a.m. every weekday on the EWTN Global Catholic Radio Network. Mitchell’s program is transmitted on more than 500 domestic and international AM & FM radio affiliates, as well as streaming services. The show is produced at Sacred Heart Radio in Cincinnati, Ohio, which happens to be Mitchell’s hometown.
“As someone who loves Cincinnati and is a devout Catholic, this job was perfect for me,” said Mitchell. “I loved doing radio as a student at WOUB and being able bring those loves together is just great.”
After graduation, Mitchell’s first job was as a traffic reporter for Westwood One. It wasn’t really her cup of tea. When she found out about the opening on the Son Rise Morning Show, Mitchell said her time in the WOUB newsroom came in handy.
“When I applied for the Son Rise Morning Show, it was for the news person position,” said Mitchell. “I got the job because of the way I approach the news and determine what is newsworthy. I learned that at WOUB. I feel like I have an NPR style, which I also learned at WOUB. I’m looking at what is most newsworthy for a Catholic audience, and I’m using those same journalistic principles.”
Mitchell has been on the show now for 11 years. She just recently returned to the program after being on maternity leave with her third child.
“It’s hard going back to work, but I love my job. It’ll be interesting to see how my husband and I adjust to having three children and me going to work so early in the morning again, but we will figure it out,” said Mitchell while chuckling. “Pray for us.”
