West Virginia Awarded $3.3M In Environmental Grants

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — U.S. Environmental Protection Agency officials have announced that $3.3 million in grants have been awarded to West Virginia communities for the cleanup or assessment of contaminated properties.
The agency said in a statement Thursday that eight properties were selected through its Brownfields program, which allocates funds for communities to restore sites where development has been complicated by potential pollutants.
The funds went toward projects including the cleanup of a former industrial refrigeration site known to be polluted with heavy metals in Hinton, and the assessment of a former steel business and sites throughout the capital city of Charleston, among other efforts statewide.
