Athens County Confirms 34 New COVID-19 Cases For January 6

ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) — Athens County has now had 3,263 total cases of COVID-19 after 39 new cases were reported Wednesday.

The Ohio Department of Health confirmed the new cases on January 6, 2021.

An analysis of ODH data indicates nine involved people aged 20-29, six involved people aged 50-59, five involved people aged 40-49, five involved people aged 70-79, four involved people aged 60-69, three involved people aged 30-39 and two involved people aged 0-19. One case remains uncategorized in an age group.

Additional cases involving a person in their 60s and a person aged 80 or older required hospitalization. According to the data, 134 people in Athens County have been hospitalized due to complications related to this coronavirus since the start of the pandemic.

According to the Athens City-County Health Department, there are 455 known active cases and 2,799 recovered cases of COVID-19 in Athens County.

Anyone experiencing respiratory symptoms is asked to call their primary care physician, urgent care, or emergency department before arriving for care to let them know that they believe they are experiencing symptoms related to COVID-19 virus.

As of 2 p.m., Wednesday, the state’s total of positive COVID-19 cases is 742,817 according to the Ohio Department of Health. The data compiled by ODH also shows 7,814 positive cases, 121 deaths and 454 new hospitalizations were reported in the last 24 hours.

ODH makes the following recommendations to protect yourself from illness:

  • Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds; dry hands with a clean towel or air dry hands.
  • Use alcohol-based hand sanitizer when soap and water are unavailable.
  • Cover your mouth with a tissue or sleeve when sneezing or coughing. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Avoid contact with people who are sick.
